The Presence of Artwork in the Workplace

BobCat Gallery, founded by artist and curator Catherine Sweet, focuses on affordable, original art - creating pop-up stores and exhibitions across London as well as offering free consultations and a wide range of artwork online for international delivery.

BobCat Gallery also recently launched low-cost artwork rental for businesses of all shapes and sizes across London. Thanks to funding from Business Innovation and Growth (BIG) South London, Catherine has been able to work with researchers at Roehampton University to better understand the real and tangible ways that the presence of artwork in a workplace can benefit employees and, in turn, customers.

Evidence shows that the thoughtful inclusion of artwork in offices and other workspaces has the potential to improve employee wellbeing and reduce everyday stress, and may also positively impact employee productivity, creativity and commitment to their organisation.

Catherine says: “Many businesses are struggling to make their office spaces appealing to teams who have realised over the last few years that their homes are often more comfortable and productive spaces for them. If you want to earn your employees’ commute, and feel the benefit of bringing your teams together in your workspace, you need to understand what makes your space better than remote working for the people who gather there.

Obviously there’s a wider discussion than which artwork to include - there are many factors in designing a working space that functions for people to do their jobs as well as giving them a space where they can flourish as humans - but selecting artwork that reflects your company’s ethos is an important step and can make more of an impact than most people realise.”

There is also evidence to show that teams who are involved in the process of selecting the artwork placed in their workspaces see a greater benefit, and this is a cornerstone of the service that BobCat Gallery now offers, along with the chance to refresh artwork selections up to twice a year.

Catherine says: “This review has provided an evidence-based approach for how BobCat Gallery can work with businesses to make sure they get the best out of the artwork they invest in. We are also able to connect businesses with local artists so they can complement the installations with creative workshops and team-building activities too. For a low cost monthly investment, not only will businesses reap the benefit of more engaged, happy and productive teams, they know they will be supporting creative networks across the city as well.”
